JUNE 1 to 3 and AUGUST 6, 2017
SAO PAULO • IBIRAPUERA PARK • TEATRO OPUS
The Samsung Blues festival began in June, with a special program, bringing to the stage of the Teatro Opus, in the Villa Lobos Shopping Mall (SP), big international names such as Malina Moye, Sonny Landreth, Albert Cummings, as well as Brazilians Igor Prado and Blues Etílicos, presented by Evandro Mesquita, the founding musician of the famous Brazilian band Blitz.
In August, on a pleasant evening, renowned instrumental rock guitarist Joe Satriani took to the festival stage for a performance - free for the first time - at the Ibirapuera Auditorium. The band included musicians Marco Minnemann (Steven Wilson/Aristocrats) on drums, Bryan Beller (Dethklok/Aristocrats) on bass, and Mike Keneally (Steve Vai/Dethklok) on keyboards and guitar.
In the setlist, Satriani included fan favorites as well as songs that had never been performed live.
The opening act for Satriani's show was bluesman Artur Menezes from Ceará, famous for the modern and authentic style of his songs.
The artist has stood out in his performances on tours and festivals in Europe, the United States and Brazil, with appearances in shows by great artists such as Buddy Guy.
In addition to the shows, the 5th edition of the project also featured a photo exhibition and a cinema with films about Blues, as well as street performances with the band Mustache and the Apaches.

THE BRANDS AT THE 5th EDITION OF THE FESTIVAL

JOE SATRIANI
Joseph "Joe" Satriani is an American instrumental rock guitarist and composer, considered a virtuoso on his instrument.
During the Samsung Blues Festival, the artist presented his last solo tour, related to the album “Shockwave Supernova”, a critical success and considered one of his best works, mainly due to the fact that the musician presents innovations that remind us of Brazilian northeastern rhythms, as in the case of “On Peregrine Wings”, and without forgetting basic R&B elements as in “San Francisco Blue”.
The beginning of a freezing night, with a starry sky and a bright moon, the versatile Satriani's repertoire offered the audience a mix of genres that mark his career, such as Rock'n'Roll, pop, progressive, and of course, blues.
Very well accompanied by one of his Ibanez guitars (he made countless guitar changes throughout the show), Satriani performed the theme that gives its name to the new work, with a heavy sound that drew very positive feedback from the fans, namely screams, applause and effusive whistles.

ALBERT
CUMMINGS
_edited_edited_edited.jpg)
Albert Cummings took to the stage at the Samsung Blues Festival performing songs from his latest album, “Someone Like You,” and a selection of his records, marking a return to his roots.
The artist is not from the blues scene of the southern United States or the cities with a more traditional blues scene in the north, such as Detroit and Chicago. Cummings is from Massachusetts, where he learned the blues chords from his father. As a teenager, he became a fan of bluegrass and switched to the banjo.
He recorded an album alongside bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton – a duo that made up the legendary trio Double Trouble, led by the phenomenal guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of his greatest idols.
Cummings is a fourth-generation carpenter and founded the band Swamp Yankee, which became part of the local blues scene and eventually went on to perform with icons of the genre such as BB King and Buddy Guy. He also worked with Double Trouble, the band of his idol Stevie.

HAMMOND
GROOVES
Hammond Grooves are experts in the legendary Hammond B3 organ and put on an exciting and relaxed show, mixing jazz, funk, boogaloo with Brazilian rhythms, maracatu, samba, baião, frevo etc. at the Samsung Blues Festival.
The show also included songs that became famous in this organ trio formation, paying homage to masters Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Jack McDuff, Reuben Wilson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Grant Green, Big John Patton, Earl Grant, George Benson and others.
The trio is a frequent formation in the trajectories of various genres, be it classical music, jazz or rock. But a typical “organ trio”, like the São Paulo-based Hammond Grooves, refers to a particular strand of modern jazz: jazz-soul, which incorporates influences from blues, gospel and rhythm & blues.
The trio released their first album, “Funktastic”, in late 2016, on a European tour.

MALINA MOYE

Sonny Landreth took to the stage at the Samsung Blues Festival and performed the repertoire from his latest album, “Recorded Live in Lafayette” (2017), which includes songs such as “True Blue”, “Brave New Girl” and “Überesso”.
Born in Mississippi, Clyde Vernon Landreth is known worldwide as the 'Slide Guitar King' for having developed a technique of playing slide and fingered notes simultaneously with his right hand, using all his fingers.
Raised in Louisiana, Landreth initially gained fame on the blues scene as a member of the Red Hot Louisiana Band led by musician Clifton Chenier, one of the kings of zydeko, a mix of blues, Cajun music and native music originating from the state of Louisiana.
His intimacy with New Orleans culture also explains why he frequently performs at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, one of the largest of its kind in the world.

ARTUR MENEZES

IGOR PRADO
BLUES BAND
The Igor Prado Blues Band opened the festival's program on Thursday, June 1st.
In 2015, the band was nominated for the 37th Memphis Blues Awards, one of the most prestigious North American awards of the genre, and the album “Way Down South”, recorded with the Delta Groove All Stars, topped the audience rankings on North American blues radio stations.
In 2016, the band was nominated for a Blues Music Award in the category of “best new artist album.” “We like traditional things,” says Prado, explaining why he and his bandmates cultivate the blues and rhythm & blues of the 1940s and 50s.
