ZAKK WYLDE & BLACK LABEL SOCIETY • KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD

STONES BLUES BAND • TATI AND NINA PARÁ

OCTOBER 26 and 27, 2019

PORTO ALEGRE • SÃO PAULO

The energetic sound of Zakk Wylde with his band Black Label Society, the chords of award-winning American guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, added to the exciting sound of the Stones Blues Band, and the energy of sisters Tati and Nina Pará, formed the cast of the 2019 edition of Samsung Best of Blues.

Zakk Wylde rescued the ancestral origins of rock - the blues - accompanied by Jeff Fabb (drums), Dario Lorina (guitar) and John DeServio (bass), performing iconic songs such as “Still Got The Blues”, in an exclusive version.

Nominated for five Grammys®, winner of two Billboard Awards, two Blues Music Awards and two Orville H. Gibson Awards, Kenny Wayne Shepherd released his new album, “The Traveler”, in May, once again topping the American blues charts. At the same time, he began a highly successful tour with Buddy Guy.

The Stones Blues Band featured Trick Bernardi (vocals and guitar), Alexandre Móica (guitar and vocals) and Paulo James (drums and vocals), as well as the special participation of Luciano Leães (keyboards).

Sisters Tatiana and Nina Pará were responsible for warming up the audience at the 2019 edition. The duo's musical journey began as pure fun, and in 2017, the twins began an original instrumental music project mixing their personal influences, from the melodic line of Blues (Tatiana) to the vigor of Heavy Metal (Nina).

ZAKK WYLDE

Alongside Dario Lorina (guitar), John DeServio (bass) and Jeff Fabb (drums), Zakk Wylde surprised the audiences of São Paulo and Porto Alegre with his Black Label Society, with reinterpretations of classics by Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers and, of course, Black Sabbath.

In more than two decades of activity, the band has had several formations, always with Wylde as leader and author of the original repertoire.

Worshipped among metal and hard rock fans, Zakk Wylde, an Irish descendant who was born in Bayonne (New Jersey) in 1967, stands out for his technical skills and the ferocious way he attacks the guitar. He emerged in 1987 as part of Ozzy Osbourne's band.

He started playing guitar at the age of eight, but only took the instrument seriously in his teens. Obsessive, he would become exhausted from playing non-stop, from the time he got home from school until the next morning. In 1996, he released his first solo album, “Book of Shadows”, whose acoustic sound, influenced by folk, surprised his most radical fans.

KENNY WAYNE
SHEPHERD

A top-class bluesman, Kenny Wayne Shepherd performed at the festival for the first time and surprised the audience with a show that was highly praised by critics and those in attendance.

A child prodigy, Shepherd became enchanted by the blues at the same age that boys often become immersed in sports or video games, and by the age of 13 he had signed a contract with a major record label. His debut album, “Ledbetter Heights” (1995), was the first in a series of best-sellers.

Accompanied by a very experienced and competent band at Samsung Best of Blues 2019, Shepherd showed his unique skill with the guitar, in addition to his own tracks, incredible for those who enjoy blues.

A cover of a Pearl Jam song got the crowd cheering and singing along. Kenny also reimagined Eddie Vedder's hit "Yellow Ledbetter" as "While We Cry," putting his own spin on the tune.

STONES
BLUES BAND

Stones Blues Band was responsible for opening the stage at Samsung Best of Blues 2019, in Porto Alegre.

The band, formed by Trick Bernardi (vocals and guitar), Alexandre Móica (guitar and vocals) and Paulo James (drums and vocals), had the special participation of Luciano Leães (keyboards): “This choice is conceptual”, says James, explaining that the band can count on occasional reinforcements, but always seeks a rawer sound.

Although the Rolling Stones' music is the unison theme of a repertoire specially designed to amplify the dialogue with the blues, instrumental soul also made an appearance at the show.

Versions of "Paint It Black", "Sympathy For the Devil", "Walking the Dog", "Ventilator Blues", among other themes, some with a vibe that recalled the sound of Booker T and The MG's (perhaps due to Leães' participation on keyboards, and mainly due to the absence of vocals), with ample space for openings and keyboard solos.

TATI AND NINA PARÁ

Twins Tatiana and Nina Pará have been on the road for quite some time now, each with their own individual trajectory. They started playing guitar at the age of 15, but, interestingly, Nina decided to switch to drums three years later. It’s no wonder they’ve been called the “noise twins.”

In addition to participating in recordings and collaborating with various artists, bands and projects, the sisters have their own solo projects: Nina released "Heart Beat" in 2014, and Tati released "My Mood" in 2016.

After the Stones Blues Band opened in Porto Alegre, the sisters took to the festival stage and began the setlist with "House on Fire" and "SRV Train", without bass or keyboards, enhanced only by the guitar riffs in the wake of classic rock/blues and the drums. The audience was thrilled with the harmony between the twins.

In São Paulo, Tati and Nina opened the night, and once again created an instrumental duo with their own repertoire, mixing influences from blues and metal.
