JUNE 20 to 25, 2024

RIO DE JANEIRO • SÃO PAULO • CURITIBA • BELO HORIZONTE

The 11th edition of the festival was especially notable for its itinerancy, maintaining its position as one of the main music festivals in Brazil. The interaction between artists and audience was exceptional, with a special appearance by Di Ferrero, who took to the stage during the CPM 22 show in São Paulo, resulting in unique collaborations and unforgettable moments.

The festival provided several amenities and services to the public present at the indoor and open air stages: exclusive Jack Daniel's bars selling shots and drinks, as well as two food courts with food trucks, bars, areas with chairs and benches, and an exclusive area for people with disabilities.

In every city, fans had a store to check out with items from the festival and the artists, as well as activations from the festival (including the famous illuminated guitar) and sponsors (themed posters, the high chair and the Jack Daniel's sound wall).

ZAKK SABBATH

The trio formed by guitarist and vocalist Zakk Wylde, bassist John DeServio and drummer Joey Castillo presents the band Zakk Sabbath, giving it their all with their tribute to the iconic band Black Sabbath.

The band performed in the 4 cities where the festival took place in 2024 (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba and Belo Horizonte), bringing the audience great hits, from the classic "Supernaut", to "Snowblind" and "Children of The Grave".

Zakk Wylde wore his traditional kilt, Scottish skirt with the famous vest of his band Black Label Society, and the trio's rapport on stage was clear during the performances.

The highlight of the shows was the double bill “N.I.B.” and “War Pigs”, which made the audience go wild and sing the choruses at the top of their lungs, even headbanging.

For those who didn't have the opportunity to see Black Sabbath live, these shows were certainly great opportunities to see and hear a considerable part of Sabbath's work, very well performed by the guitarist who accompanied Ozzy Osbourne for more than ten years.

JOE BONAMASSA

The American artist, who many still think is British due to his latent influences from sixties blues rock, demonstrates class not only in the well-cut blue suit he wears. His choice of tones and notes has led him to the status of a giant of contemporary blues.

And his repertoire is also incredibly fine!

Back in Brazil after 11 years, Bonamassa and his highly competent band composed of Josh Smith (guitar, also producer), Calvin Turner (bass), Lemar Carter (drums), Reese Wynans (organ and keyboards, ex-Double Trouble), Jade MacRae and Danielle De Andrea (both backing vocals) brought to Best of Blues and Rock a show based on the second volume of “Blues Deluxe” (2023), a reinterpretation work released two decades after the first.

Improvisations, drum solos, refined versions, original compositions and top-quality blues; that's what the elegant Joe offered at the Best of Blues and Rock 2024, and it was impossible not to imagine yourself in a classic blues bar in the company of a good whiskey.

ERIC GALES

Someone who is not aware of this might find it a bit self-indulgent to see a guy who comes on stage with a crown on the screen. This is actually a reference to “Crown” (2022), Eric Gales’ latest album co-produced by Joe Bonamassa. Known as a child prodigy, Gales released his first album at the age of 17.

For the first time at the festival, Eric performed in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Curitiba, and in his repertoire, after an introduction adapting “Carmina Burana”, he released an instrumental version of the exciting “Smokestack Lightning” (Howlin' Wolf) that made even the most serious headbanger dance. The drums of Nick Hayes and the percussion of LaDonna Gales, wife of the group's leader, were the highlights.

The setlist concluded with a whimsical version of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” (Jimi Hendrix Experience), with, of course, some adaptations: the verses are played in a funkier style, a totally clean solo plays in the middle of the song and some excerpts from “Für Elise” (Ludwig van Beethoven), “Kashmir” (Led Zeppelin) and “Back in Black” (AC/DC) show how the artist goes from classical music to classic rock in the blink of an eye.

KIKO LOUREIRO

It was a memorable night for rock lovers, full of talent and emotion provided by Kiko Loureiro.

The guitarist shone in Rio de Janeiro, moving the audience with his performance. Expressing his longing to play in Brazil, he recalled his last show in Rio, with Megadeth, in 2017.

Performing songs from his solo career, Loureiro brought the audience to ecstasy with “Nova Era” and Megadeth’s somber “Conquer Or Die.”

Fans were thrilled and moved by “Nothing To Say”, alongside Bruno Sutter (Massacration), and the emotional “Rebirth”, sung by Rafael Bittencourt (Angra).

Born in Rio de Janeiro on June 16, 1972, Kiko Loureiro is a renowned Brazilian musician, recognized as a multi-instrumentalist, composer and guitarist.

Throughout his career, he has been a member of prominent bands in the heavy metal scene, such as Megadeth and Angra. In addition to his contribution to the discographies of Angra and Megadeth, Loureiro has a solid solo career, with five albums released.

CPM 22

The CPM22 performance at Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo, was one of the most energetic moments of the event.

The show, marked by classics such as “Um Minuto para o Fim do Mundo” and “Regina Let's Go”, captured the essence of Brazilian punk rock and excited the crowd that attended in large numbers.

The band's intense performance and vocalist Badaui's charisma created a powerful connection with the audience, showing the strength of CPM22 at a festival focused on blues and rock.

The band's authenticity and stage presence attracted fans from both old and new, especially from Generation Z, who attended in large numbers. Critics praised the band's ability to keep their sound relevant over the years, adapting to the changing times without losing the essence that captivated audiences since the 90s.

The lyrics, which address universal themes such as friendship and overcoming, came to life, and the end of the performance was marked by a standing ovation from the audience, leaving a memorable mark on the festival and reinforcing the relevance of CPM22 as one of the most influential bands in Brazilian rock.

DI FERRERO

The NX Zero vocalist enchanted the audience that was present at Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo, with a performance that mixed hits from his solo career and the band's classics.

Among the songs that got the crowd going were hits like "Razões e Emoções" and "Sentença," which were received enthusiastically by fans, many of whom were thrilled to relive this phase of the artist's career.

Di Ferrero brought an energetic band to accompany him on stage, with highlights including the intense presence of drummer Peracetta, and guitarists Bruno Genz and Johnny Bonafé.

In several passages, Di interacted with the audience, encouraging everyone to sing together, especially in the choruses of her best-known hits.

The artist demonstrated his musical maturity in his solo career, presenting more recent tracks with a contemporary and striking sound, maintaining the identity he has built over the years. The audience was receptive to these new songs, applauding and following Di Ferrero from the beginning to the end of the show.

YOHAN KISSER

As heir to the Brazilian rock tradition, being the son of the legendary Andreas Kisser, Yohan opened the night for Zakk Sabbath at the show in Belo Horizonte.

The artist had already performed at the festival in 2022, and once again brought to the Best of Blues and Rock stage a performance that mixed technique and energy, demonstrating the mastery and respect he has for the genre.

His repertoire included songs from his bands Sioux 66 and Kisser Clan, delivering a true celebration of rock with striking solos and heavy riffs that fired up the crowd. His ability to alternate moments of pure aggression with softer melodic passages showed musical maturity and his own personality.

In addition, Yohan incorporated diverse influences, not only from heavy metal, but also from blues and classic rock, creating a dynamic performance that pleased fans of different styles.

The show was a celebration of the legacy of Brazilian rock, with Yohan bringing a personal and vibrant interpretation of the songs, something that won over both veterans and younger audiences, many of whom saw the musician as a symbol of continuity and renewal for the genre.

HIBRIA

The Brazilian band Hibria, with its 28-year career, presented impressive musical maturity and harmony in Curitiba.

For the first time at the festival, the band opened the stage for Zakk Sabbath and won over the audience from the first chords.

In an interview for Rolling Stone Brazil, the band's guitarist and founding member, Abel Camargo, said that the show would be “very, very special”. And this was confirmed on stage!

The band's current lineup features Victor Emeka on vocals, Abel Camargo and Vicente Telles on guitars, Thiago Baumgarten on bass and Otávio Quiroga on drums.

The performance ended with the classics “Shine” and “Tiger Punch”.

Once the first chapter of the night was completed, the result was a show very well synchronized with the festival's proposal.

COME TO BRAZIL

WHY DO SO MANY WORLD MUSIC LEGENDS WANT TO PERFORM AT THE BEST OF BLUES AND ROCK FESTIVAL

JOE BONAMASSA

"I'm looking around here and we see a lot of Iron Maiden and Fugazi T-shirts. We see a lot of heavy rock'n'roll and I haven't been here for 11 years.

There wasn't much recognition 11 years ago, but because of social media, it doesn't matter, put up a picture of a car and there will be someone chiming in saying 'come to Brazil'.

So I have two questions: is it the same person with ten different accounts doing this? Or is there a real audience?”

ERIC GALES

Eric, extremely charismatic and smiling, made it clear that he loves Brazil:

“I’ve been to Brazil three or four times, in many different places. And it’s always been the best time, the best food, the best people, the best audience, the best shows, everything. It’s been incredible.”

“I think the blues is very contagious anywhere in the world. I think once it’s played, heard and received, the feeling is very mutual. I mean, whether it’s in Brazil, China or Africa, Memphis, Tennessee, Los Angeles, Nashville, anywhere and that’s one thing I’m very, very lucky about.”

ZAKK SABBATH

For the 57-year-old guitarist, the prospect of sharing the stage with these talents and reliving previous experiences in Brazil is exciting:

"The last time we were in Brazil, we had a great time. It was incredible. Plus, I'll be alongside my partners Joe [Bonamassa] and Kiko [Loureiro], all killing it. So I'm looking forward to seeing them and everyone again and having a great time."

"It's always amazing. Every time I go to Brazil it's amazing because everyone is so passionate and full of energy. And let's not forget the Brazilian steakhouses!"
